FINANCE MINISTRY CONDUCTS INTER-MINISTERIAL CONSULTATIONS ON THE BUDGET FOR FY 2020/21

Ministry of Finance this week concluded the Inter-Ministerial consultations on the budget for FY 2020/21 with sectors of Government which were categorised under clusters namely: Infrastructure and Rural Development, Governance (Public Administration, Justice, Law and Order structures), Security, Social Services and Production.

The two week Inter-Ministerial consultations were aimed at concretizing the strategic policy and operational interventions for the next financial year’s budget and gain consensus on key strategic initiatives that need to be reflected in respective sector budget framework papers.

Finance Minister Matia Kasaija while opening these consultations informed Sector Ministers and their technical staff that the Government of Uganda resource envelope is expected to decline from Ushs.23, 464 billion this current financial year 2019/20 to Ushs.22, 998 billion in financial year 2020/21.

Kasaija said the decline is attributed to one off expenditures that are not going to be carried forward and the debt payments projected to increase over the same period.

The strategic priorities under the infrastructure and rural development cluster include: improving feeder and national road networks, providing affordable and reliable electricity and addressing delayed acquisition of land for government infrastructure among many others.

The priorities under the Security cluster include: strengthening the capacity of security agencies to address security threats, enhancing welfare of security personnel, resettling and re-integrating veterans into productive civilian livelihoods among others.

Under the production cluster, the priorities include improving production and productivity, value addition, standards and marketing, enhancing ICT for production and marketing, science and innovation, tourism and climate change mitigation.
